Description
Geosynthetics have been extensively implemented all around the world for improving weak foundations, reinforcing critical slopes and retaining walls, coastal protection systems, and improving weak pavement layers. Both woven and non-woven geotextiles have been used for reinforcement and hydraulic applications in pavement design. A newly available wicking geotextile serves several functions such as drainage, capillary action, separation, and reinforcement in a single layer. The wicking fiber is made of special hydrophilic and hygroscopic 4DGTM (DG = Deep Grove) fibers with a multichannel cross-section. The multichannel cross-section has a high number of wicking channels per fiber and a high shape factor, enabling it to laterally transport water through its channels in an unsaturated environment through capillary action.
A small-scale box setup is used to understand the moisture migration and redistribution capacity of the wicking geotextile in a controlled environment.
